In a significant move that will directly affect daily commuters, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has officially made an announcement of 100% rise in metro and electric bus fare all over Islamabad and Rawalpindi, effective from June 1, 2025.
According to CDA officials, the fare for metro and electric buses has been doubled — jumping from Rs. 50 to Rs. 100 per ride. The authority cites administrative and financial challenges as the primary reasons behind the fare hike. This move comes despite earlier denials by CDA when reports of a potential fare increase began circulating just a few days ago.

Surprisingly, not every route is impacted. The Red Line Metro Bus Service from Saddar Rawalpindi to Secretariat Islamabad will remain a flat fare of Rs. 30. This move provides some respite to the users of this particular corridor, particularly those who rely on daily commuting between the twin cities.
The 100% hike in metro and electric bus fare has also evoked mixed reactions from frequent commuters, with most of them taken aback by the dramatic hike. An already climbing fuel price and inflation are weighing on household expenses, and the fare hike is another additional burden for commuters using public transport.

Commuters are now asking if enhanced service quality or increased route coverage will be added with the revised pricing. For now, however, the CDA is staunch in its position, reiterating that the increase was necessary to support sustainable operations of public transport systems.
