Russia, China, Pakistan push Middle East ceasefire resolution at UN

Date:

Russia, China, and Pakistan on Sunday jointly submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Middle East.

The proposal comes ahead of an emergency UNSC session, reflecting growing concerns over escalating hostilities in the region.

According to diplomats, the draft has been circulated among Council members, with a request for feedback by Monday evening. However, it remains unclear when the resolution will be formally tabled for a vote. To pass, the resolution needs at least nine votes in favor and no veto from the five permanent members—the United States, France, Britain, Russia, or China.

In the wake of heightened tensions, Iran has called for a crisis UN meeting after the recent US airstrikes on its nuclear sites. Iran’s UN representative Saeed Iravani decried the airstrikes in a letter to the Council, terming them unjustified and threatening.

He pointed out that the facilities targeted are subject to round-the-clock monitoring by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and completely adhere to international commitments, including the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

Joining the global outcry, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has roundly denounced both the Israeli attacks on Iran and the recent US moves. In a high-level session in Istanbul, foreign ministers of the 57-member group condemned what they described as “Israeli aggression against Iran” and demanded an end to the conflict.

The OIC showed concern at the deepening crisis and announced it would set up a ministerial contact group to involve international and regional actors in de-escalation efforts.

In a follow-up statement, the OIC labeled the US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities as a “dangerous escalation” that threatens regional peace and security. The group urged the international community to take “deterrent measures” against further aggression and hold Israel accountable for its actions.
