US-Pakistan ties entering new era of strategic cooperation: PM

Date:

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday lauded former US President Donald Trump for playing a critical role in easing recent Pakistan-India military tensions, terming him as “a true man of peace.”

In his speech at a high-profile event on the 249th Independence Day of the United States at the US Embassy in Islamabad, the Prime Minister underscored Trump’s energetic diplomacy in facilitating a Pakistan-India ceasefire and regional stability.

The event was graced by Pakistan’s top officials, such as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, federal ministers, the diplomatic community, and top regional and international figures.

PM Shehbaz Sharif, in his speech, emphasized that efforts towards Pakistan-India ceasefire were made possible with the timely intervention of friendly nations, the United States, and some Middle Eastern countries, who intervened secretly to create an atmosphere of dialogue instead of aggression.

Referring to the Pahalgam incident, which sparked a sharp escalation between the two nations, Shehbaz reiterated Pakistan’s position that the attack was a false flag operation carried out to malign Islamabad. “We offered an international, credible, and transparent probe to uncover the truth. Unfortunately, India chose to respond with hostility,” he said.

The Prime Minister revealed that during the four-day conflict, India carried out aggressive military action, resulting in the martyrdom of 33 Pakistani civilians, including women, children, and the elderly.

In response, Pakistan exercised its right to self-defense and shot down six Indian fighter jets. He credited American diplomacy for urging both sides to step back. “US friends remained in close contact and conveyed that Pakistan had responded appropriately. They pushed for calm and ceasefire,” Shehbaz explained.

He commended Trump’s leadership and diplomatic tone, saying, “President Trump did not just act as a neutral voice—he emerged as a peacebuilder. His efforts to de-escalate tensions and promote regional harmony are commendable. He’s a man who opposes both cold and hot wars, and stands for humanity, trade, and prosperity.”

Highlighting Pakistan-US trade relations, PM Shehbaz noted that both nations were engaging in meaningful dialogue to expand cooperation in areas like IT, agriculture, education, and health. He expressed hope that the two sides would soon resolve tariff-related challenges and unlock greater investment opportunities.

The premier also emphasized the historical depth of Pakistan’s ties with the US, recalling that the US was one of the first countries to recognize Pakistan’s independence in 1947. “Our partnership spans decades and is grounded in mutual respect, democratic values, and shared interests,” he said.

Shehbaz also acknowledged the US-funded development projects in Pakistan, including dam construction and energy infrastructure, as signs of long-standing bilateral cooperation.

Drawing a symbolic comparison, he said the democratic values championed by the US founding fathers resonate deeply with the vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. “Both nations believe in constitutional supremacy, civil rights, and peace through diplomacy,” he added.

As he wrapped up his address, PM Shehbaz extended warm wishes to President Trump and the American people, saying the Pakistani nation stands in solidarity with the United States on this momentous occasion. He reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to peace and prosperity, not just in South Asia but across the globe.
